Are tattoos still taboo at work?

Nowadays it is very common to meet people of any age, from young to old, with a tattoo or to see people in the street with half of their bodies tattooed.

“However, does the fact that we have become accustomed to seeing them mean that they are socially accepted?”

Some may think so, but the truth is that tattoos still generate brakes in some people and this, in part, is caused by the prejudices that surround them. So much so, that sometimes tattooed people may have fewer opportunities than those who are not, especially if we refer to the workplace. Looking back, a lot of progress has been made in this aspect, but when people who wear tattoos are sometimes taken less seriously, we realize that it is an issue that is still present.

Some studies reflect how the fact of having tattoos influences the decision to hire someone for a job. Many people agree that, if the job is public-facing, it is preferable that the tattoos are not in a visible area as they may not be to the client's liking and, therefore, it will have a negative impact on the business. With this, we realize that, even if the person in charge has nothing against tattoos, when thinking about his business, he will probably end up not hiring the tattooed candidate. So, inevitably, the fact of having tattoos puts that person in an inferior position compared to others.

It is also important to consider the type of tattoo. If we are talking about offensive tattoos, this is a very different matter. In this case, any tattoo containing negative messages, hate or offensive words should not be acceptable. On the other hand, a tattoo that is not of this type should not be a problem when looking for a job.

It is also necessary to take into account the sector. Some, such as the leisure industry or youth clothing stores, have a more permissive policy on tattoos. On the other hand, others, such as the health sector, banking, education or aeronautics, still put up resistance. Tattoos do not determine an individual's professionalism and, for this reason, should not condition their professional career.

Companies that decide to reject candidates because they have tattoos are losing talent. A person's skills are not measured by the tattoos they wear. So, the day that companies and professionals allow themselves to hire tattooed people, there will be greater acceptance and normalization and tattoos will no longer be a taboo in the workplace.
